Corinna and I would like to start a conversation we are calling ‘age appropriate fashion’. We like to think of ourselves as hip, cool chicks in our early 40’s. But we acknowledge there are certain trends we have ‘outgrown’ so to speak (a nice way of putting it!).
So let’s discuss the printed denim trend. I was at Starbucks a few weeks ago and did a double take when I saw a woman that looked to be in her mid 40’s rockin’ the new, printed denim trend. Wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Is there an age limit on printed/patterned denim? What do you think? We want to hear!

Alright ladies, here is some general advice on printed denim!
Yes! Women over 40 can rock printed denim, the 2 most important things to keep in mind:
The FIT, the jean has to fit your body type. Don’t fall in love with the print and ignore the fit and shape! This includes stretch, leg shape, waist length, etc.
The PRINT, make sure it is appropriate so you feel confident! Overly girly prints are, well girly! Tonal prints feel more sophisticated (check out Ralph Lauren, JBrand, Paige, Isaac Mizrahi, and Not Your Daughter’s Jeans).
IF you are feeling timid with the denim, switch to a printed cotton pant/capri. You are still hitting the trend, but doing it with your own style. If you feel more comfortable, you will appear more confident!
Thank you Gino! Ladies – we just got some great fashion advice from a top NYC stylist! I’m going to trust you on this one Gino. I will admit that I was afraid of colored denim at first as well, until I found a pair of AG jeans in a fit and color I loved. I wear them all the time. I will now consider printed denim…..not commit….but consider!
Personally, I think printed denim is for teenagers and old ladies.
I’m in my twenties and I have a difficult time even looking at the printed denim. Few can pull it off, typically the hipsters. I hope the trend fades, quickly.
Amen Stephanie! I do hope the trend fades quickly……
It all depends. Now matchy matchy is my biggest fashion don’t but printed denim just needs the right pieces to bring it together.
I think as we age, the printed bottoms need to get more subtle and if you are going to go with a printed pant, you need to wear a solid, simple top to balance it out!

Good advice Diane!
I agree! I just bought the Michael Kors chain print and will pair it with an orange silk wrap shirt.
Hello,
I reckon it just depends on what you like.
What would the world be like if dressed for ourselves not for others? The NYC stylist might be gasping right now at a comment like that!
Bearing in mind people will judge us, how do we want to be perceived?
I am personally not a big reader of fashion mags, don’t watch TV or have many other ways to access the fads of the moment, don’t spend much time in shopping malls either.
Not that there is anything wrong with trends I am just not that way inclined.
To your happiness, self expression and harmony,
Susan
