Fake Food Display

Ron and I are working towards putting our house on the market in mid-March.  I love to stage our kitchen with just a few items on the counter.  One of the items I like to use is a beautiful cake stand that includes a wood base and glass dome.  It looks beautiful on its own, but much nicer with a cake inside.  I used to buy a cheap cake from the grocery store, freeze it, then display it.   I would use it over and over for parties.  Then there was the incident…

Fake Food Display

…at one party I fell asleep early and woke up the next morning finding the year-old cake partially eaten.  Obviously the eaters of the cake must have been sick, but no one admitted to eating it.  For the next party, I found a great solution…a fake cake.  It turns out that you can purchase fake food, that looks just like the real thing, for cheap.  I just searched ‘fake cake’ on google and found many options.  This one only cost $30 with shipping and looks great!

Quick tip — On the days that you have showings or an open house, just place two drops of vanilla on a baking sheet and place in a heated oven for a few minutes. The house will smell like you’ve been baking your ‘fake food’ all day :-) Also, the vanilla aroma from the oven is natural vs. the sickenly sweet smell that comes from vanilla candles.

Two smart tips, but I still would prefere the refrozen one. Something about 100% fake doesn’t do the trick for me.
I guess the one with vanilla would get your own cravings going. Beware! ;-)

Great tips! And I didn’t know about buying fake food. But your story is a little humorous. Funny no one admitted to eating the cake. Thanks for sharing.

That’s a great idea! After my daughter’s wedding, I realized there were no good photos of the wedding cake. I talked to the photographer and she agreed to come re-photograph a cake. I made one out of styrofoam and sheetrock mud for the reshoot…can’t tell from the photos that it is fake.

Thanks for the link for fake food. I had made fake cookies using the flour and salt recipe for photos, until a nephew tried to eat one:)
I’m having a Valentine link party going on now and would love you to link up.
