Happy Earth Day! I am using Earth Day as an excuse to organize my hard to recycle items. Actually, properly disposing of these items follows the Reduce Reuse Recycle mantra to the tee. Ron and I are great at managing our recycling items that our city picks up weekly, in fact, we might be a little over zealous in recycling even the smallest pieces of paper. However, we have not mastered the best method for ‘recycling’ the items that the city does not pick up.
For the past few years, we have stock piled styrofoam, small electronics, paint, and hazardous materials in our shed. I mean we literally piled these items in our shed into one massive heap. It created many arguments over the mess and how to rid ourselves of it.
This year I vowed to organize this process. We now have 5 bins (all reused from previous projects) to control the chaos. The 5 bins are clearly labeled paint, styrofoam, electronics, household cleaners, and misc chemicals. The bins stack nicely against the wall in the front corner of the shed and should keep the ‘chaos’ to a minimum. I am not sure if the bin sizes will be right for our needs, but we will adjust as needed. Moving forward, we vow to make 2 trips a year to our city special collection agency to make sure that we stay on top of these items.
