Shoe Closet Organization

Shoe closet organization is not one of my strengths.  Just look at the ‘Before’ photo below!  We live in a small, 1920’s bungalow, so our closet space is limited.  The closets that do exist are small and odd shaped.  Corinna helped design a couple of closets in our home (see our great nursery closet) and made them much more functional.  She has taught me quite a bit about closet organization and as a result I have become obsessed with The Container Store!

In our master bedroom there is a weird, shallow little closet just outside of the master bath.  It is perfect for storing shoes and bathroom toiletries, but that is about it.  In order to store as many shoes as possible (priorities!), I’ve always kept my shoes in their original boxes and stuffed and stacked them into place.   However with all of the different size shoe boxes it has always been a mess.  And because the shoes were in solid boxes, I didn’t have a good visual of my shoe options.  The girls deserved better!

The Container Store to the rescue! I decided to invest in standard sized, see through shoe boxes. I fell in love with these linen shoe boxes, but at $14.99 each I did the math and quickly changed my tune. Instead I purchased these clear, plastic shoe boxes and they worked beautifully. If you buy them in a case of 20, they are only $1.69 each. They also have boot boxes that are large enough to hold two pairs of boots (or booties!) per box. It has made a huge difference in both look and functionality. I can store significantly more shoes now than I could before the closet make-over!

I think you were better off without the linen boxes. “Visual management” – being able to make things visible through the use of the clear boxes – makes it easier to pick your shoes every day. And lots of people are “visual”.

I totally agree. The windows on the linen boxes are not large enough to really give you a good visual of the shoe. I’m happy with the clear, plastic boxes and so is my wallet. Like the term ‘visual management’ – I may need to borrow that!
