Short-Term Housing: Organization

I am finally getting situated in my new (downsized) loft apartment.  I must admit, however, that it is tough designing for short-term housing.  As I am looking to fill the space with furniture, I am aware that the new pieces should be flexible, knowing that I will not be here for more than a year.

I am looking for pieces that can grow (and contract) with my living conditions.  A great example of pieces that have been exceptionally flexible, are my free-standing Elfa drawer units from The Container Store.  I have used these drawer units in my master closet, office, and garage.  They are sturdy and travel well.

For this last move, I simply placed each unit in a wardrobe box with the drawer contents intact.  Upon unpacking, I just moved them into the closet and my clothes were immediately organized.  I am so happy that they fit perfectly in my closet again!

I have a set of two small, solid wood bookshelves that have moved with me from my tiny condo to my house and will go with me to our next house. I bought them unfinished, so they are easy to paint new colors, in a timeless craftsman design, and great for holding baskets of clothing, shoe boxes, office supplies, and even books.

Good luck with your temporary space!

I didn’t even think of repaintable wood furniture…this would be a great solution for my new desk. Thanks!!
