This is our first annual Super Bowl Cheat Sheet! For those of you who don’t get into football but love a good party, this will help you hold your own. Here are the top 10 things to know about Super Bowl 2013:
1. What is the Super Bowl?
The championship game between the two NFL conferences – the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC)
2. Who’s Playing?
San Francisco 49ers (NFC) vs. Baltimore Ravens (AFC)
3. What color should I wear?
Red & Gold (San Francisco), Purple, Black & Gold (Baltimore)…..or to remain neutral just wear gold.
4. Where are they playing?
New Orleans – perhaps Cajun food would be appropriate?
5. What’s unique about Super Bowl 47?
Brother vs. Brother – the two head coaches, Jim Harbaugh (San Francisco) and John Harbaugh (Baltimore) have the same last name because yes…. they are related.
6. I’m not a football fan, why should I watch?
It’s not just the Super Bowl of football, it’s the Super Bowl of TV commercials as well!
7. I’m so bored watching the first half, why should I hang in there?
BEYONCE IS SINGING AT HALFTIME!! Hang in there! (Live or lip sync? TBD…)
8. Great halftime show, now I’m bored again. Why should I hang in there after halftime?
More great commercials!
9. Interesting fact about San Francisco:
The starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, was a back up when the season started. Now he could take them all the way!
10. Interesting fact about Baltimore:
This is future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis’ last game after 17 years in the league. What a way to go out!
Hope you checked out Corinna’s post yesterday for cocktail weenies. Perfect football party food! You should also check out our ‘queso-off’ posts, Dad’s Famous Chile con Queso & Deb’s Spinach Queso.
Another appetizer idea is a recipe I got from my beautiful and very health conscious BFF that I’ve dubbed ‘Man Dip’! It is full of pasteurized, processed, meaty gunk and dudes love it. Here goes:
Man Dip
Ingredients:
2 8-ounce blocks cream cheese
1 roll Jimmy Dean hot sausage
1 can Rotel (drain half liquid from can)
Instructions:
Brown sausage and put in bowl with cream cheese and Rotel. Stir well and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve with Fritos Scoops.

Sadly, as a non-American who’s lived in the US for almost 3 years now, I’ve never actually managed to grasp the whole Super Bowl thing. Maybe it makes me sound like an ignoramus, but it’s mainly because I’m not a football person (the various versions of football in Australia equally make me yawn). Anyhow, loved your cheat sheet! It really did explain a few things I had no idea about :)

I’m glad I read this, I am married to a huge football fan and didn’t even know who was in the super bowl this year :) I usually do watch the game for the commercials only.

I always record the game on my DVR so I can go back and watch the commercials I miss! Commercials and the halftime show are sometimes better than the game! Thanks for stopping by Heather!
Hi Madeleine! I was raised in a football family so have grown up enjoying the sport. But totally understand why it might make you yawn! We lived in New Zealand for a year and tried to really get into rugby. And Australian rules football was fun to watch but never really got the hang of either game. Thanks for stopping by!
thanks for that – Last year I only tuned in for Madonna -
Great cheat sheet! I am a Football fan (Team Panthers), so I am sooo excited about the big game! I am pulling for the Ravens though! I love Ray and I’m so glad this is the way he is ending his career! Hopefully, it will be a win. And LOL at lipsync or live…I’m going for the lip sync… ;-) Visiting from SITS.

You saved me!!! My husband is going to be very impressed! To give myself a little bit of credit, I already knew who was playing as I am born in raised in San Francisco, and I know that the competing coaches are brothers. HA! Check me out. Visiting from SITS!

I caught some of Jim Harbaugh’s games in the Big House. Go Blue!
